The camera, honestly

Mochi can notice when you smoke, using your webcam. That's a big thing to trust an app with, so here's exactly how it works.

  • Off until you turn it on. It's a switch in Settings ("Use the webcam detector"), and the app works fine without it.
  • Nothing counts until you say so. It only asks "cigarette or joint?". Answer "Neither" and nothing is logged.
  • Pause it any time from Home, or turn it off for good. Your webcam's light shows when it's on.
  • No photos are kept. Saving training photos (to teach it your own setup) is off, and only you can turn it on. Even then they stay in Mochi's folder on your computer, and you can delete them.
  • Your computer asks you first. macOS and Windows only let Mochi use the camera after you allow it.
  • You can check the code. Mochi's code is public on GitHub, so anyone can see what the camera part does.

  1. Open Mochi-Setup.exe.
  2. If Windows says "Windows protected your PC": click More info, then Run anyway.
  3. Mochi opens when it's done. Make your account and pick your habits.

Mac

macOS 12 or newer, Apple silicon and Intel

  1. Unzip it, then right-click Install Mochi → Open.
  2. On newer macOS: open it once, then System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway.
  3. Mochi opens when it's done. Make your account and pick your habits.
Why the warning when you install? Mochi is made by one student, and the developer certificates that remove it cost money every year. They're first on the list once the app earns enough to pay for them. The app only talks to its own friends server, and your tracking data never leaves your computer.
On your phone: in Mochi on your computer, open Settings → Phone and scan the code. Add it to your home screen and it works like an app.

Questions

Where does my data go?

Your tracking data stays on your computer. Only what you choose to share with friends (like your Mochi's look and the numbers you picked) goes to the friends server. More in the privacy policy.

Does it watch my screen?

It only notices which app or website is in front, never what's on it. The optional smoking detector is explained in The camera, honestly: it runs only on your computer, only if you turn it on.

Can Mochi die?

His hearts drop on bad days, and yes, he can run out. Then a baby hatches and you start a new generation. Good days, meals on time and your friends keep him going.

When can I get the egg?
